Renewability Project with Photovoltaic Plants in Sicily

Esseco strengthens its commitment to energy sustainability by joining Renewability, the first corporate energy community in Italy, established to promote the production and direct consumption of renewable energy. This consortium project, launched in 2022 by Altair Chemical* (an Esseco Industrial company) with an initial investment of €10.9 million, enabled the construction of the first batch of photovoltaic plants across Lazio and Abruzzo, already operational.

In 2023, Esseco decided to join the initiative, investing €2.3 million in new photovoltaic plants in Sicily, with a total annual production capacity of 2,688 MWh.

An Innovative Model for Greater Energy Independence

Renewability is a consortium that brings together industrial companies with the goal of building renewable energy plants and distributing the generated power directly to its members. This model allows businesses to become “prosumers” (producers and consumers), reducing reliance on the electricity market while ensuring long-term stable and sustainable supply.

Esseco’s participation in Renewability aligns with three strategic objectives:

  • Enhancing corporate sustainability by increasing the share of electricity demand covered by renewable energy
  • Supporting the development of new renewable energy resources in Italy, through a long-term asset-based vision
  • Reducing energy market volatility, securing direct supply at competitive costs

An Investment for the Future

The energy produced by Renewability’s plants covers a significant portion of the participating companies’ energy needs, at a cost below €60/MWh over the entire lifespan of the installations. This allows Esseco to optimize costs and reduce environmental impact, actively contributing to the growth of renewable energy in Italy.

Through its participation, Esseco joins a project involving other leading Italian industrial players, including a major European steel group (a leader in merchant rolling) and a chemical-pharmaceutical company.

Joining Renewability marks a significant step in Esseco’s energy transition journey, reinforcing the company’s commitment to a more sustainable and future-oriented chemical industry.
