The Origins of Esseco: An Industrial Legacy Born in the 1920s

The story of Esseco UK, part of the Altair Chemical group, traces its roots to the early 1920s—a period of post-war industrial transformation in Italy. It was during this time that the foundational vision of what would become a globally recognized chemical industry player first took shape.

The Birth of an Industrial Journey

The company’s industrial beginnings stem from chemical engineer Piero Nulli and his uncle Angelo Ferrario, who in the early 1920s became partners in “Cappuccini S.p.A.”—a Milan-based company specializing in refrigeration systems, located in the Bovisa district, then a rapidly growing industrial hub.

Piero Nulli’s technical expertise and innovative vision proved pivotal from the outset. Under his leadership, the company gradually shifted its focus from mechanical engineering to chemical manufacturing. One of the first major transformations came with the introduction of a sulfur dioxide (SO₂) production plant—a chemical compound then used as a refrigerant fluid.

A Turning Point in Chemical Innovation

This strategic decision marked the beginning of an evolution that would establish the company as a key player in the chemical sector, setting the course for the Nulli family’s future ventures and laying the groundwork for what would eventually become Esseco.

A story defined by vision, transformation, and sustained growth—always driven by technical excellence and industrial foresight.
